WHAT IS LENT?
It is the six weeks before Easter, excluding Sundays because Sunday is the day the church gathers together to celebrate the hope of the Resurrection. This means the season of Lent is actually 40 days set apart for intentional focus on journeying with Jesus Christ to the cross. During Lent we deepen our understanding of God's love for us that is made known to us in Christ's life and Christ's journey to the cross.
Lent at First Covenant this year is using Luke Powery's devotional Were You There?: Lenten Reflections on the Spirituals to deepen our experience. Powery is the chaplain at Duke Divinity School and his book not only provides the basis for special music during worship, but also one of our spiritual growth opportunities through daily personal and weekly group use. It has been written "Spirituals are considered valuable, not only for their sublime musical expression but for their profound insights into the human condition and Christian life. Many of them focus on the climax of the Christian drama, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the ways in which those events bring about the liberation of God's people. " Each week we will be experiencing these spirituals together in worship as we journey, together, to the cross.
This winter our worship services are being recorded and will be available in our Sunday morning email and in the media player below by 7:00am each Sunday. If you are looking for a past worship service, please visit our Worship Services Archive page by CLICKING HERE.
